As a procedure, microneedling makes use of a handheld device – containing very fine needles – to inflict micro-punctures on the skin. These punctures are much like little pin-pricks, which are entirely superficial. The puncture injuries trigger the skin’s natural repair processes, which stimulate elastin and collagen production. The collagen and elastin fill the empty spaces created by superficial injuries; collagen helps to keep skin looking and feeling firm and elastic, which gives an overall appearance of youth and fullness.
Microneedling can help to improve the look of scars and acne scars, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the look of stretch marks, and help improve the overall texture of your skin. In addition, it can help with reducing pore size and is easily and frequently combined with other topical treatments which can further improve your results.
With microneedling treatments, there is a range of needle sizes that can be used, which determine the treatment’s depth. These needles range from 0.1mm up to 3.0mm; the shortest needles only affect the epidermis, while the longest needles affect the reticular dermis, which is the deepest layer of the skin. Typically, shorter needle lengths are used for cosmetic purposes, as they help to increase penetration of topical treatments, while longer needles are used for the treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks. It is important that you speak with your medical practitioner to determine which needle length is right for you and will best help you to reach the results you seek.
Typically, treatment sessions last between fifteen to sixty minutes on average, depending on the area being treated. There is a modicum of discomfort and bleeding, but this will largely depend on the length of the needle used. For those who opt for a deeper microneedling session, then a numbing cream will be used in order to assure your comfort during the procedure. After its application, your therapist will roll the microneedling device over your skin to create tiny punctures, which may cause a prickly sensation across your skin that is being treated.
After treatment, you may experience some redness and minor swelling in treated areas. It is recommended that you avoid sun exposure immediately after treatment and that, for twenty-four to forty-eight hours after treatment, you avoid wearing any form of makeup.
The frequency of treatment will depend on the length of the needle used along with what your desired results are. With that being said, the general recommendation for microneedling treatments is for them to be performed in a series of three to five treatments every four to six weeks, and include a maintenance regime to help maintain the results.
